I hope you all enjoyed a fun and relaxing long weekend! This week will be another exciting new adventure in both math and science as we begin new units, perfect our interactive notebooks, and learn how to be savvy researchers.
In seventh grade math we will be learning about integers and how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide these fantastic numbers. Students will be working with manipulatives to model these calculations, gain a better sense of “signed numbers”, and form mathematical arguments for examples and counterexamples of these types of problems.
Our 8th grade math students are delving into equations with two variables. We will take it slow, checking for understanding on a day to day basis and use real world situations in order for the problems to make sense.
Calling All Researchers Project. In science, students will work in teams to research an area of interest within the areas of genetics and DNA to form a consensus on why this research should be funded by the federal government. Topics students will be researching include stem cells, the human genome, cloning, genetic diseases and disorders, as well as DNA fingerprinting and genetic engineering. This project will last about a week as students learn the important steps they need to take to achieve the skills needed in order to persuade their audience to fund their research.
Keep your feelers out for invitations coming home on Wednesday for the Grandparents brunch.
I will be asking students to have you sign their planners on a weekly basis and I will be checking with them on Mondays.
Reminder: You can find links to my planbook for missing work, absences, etc. as well as links to learning for extra math help, science in the news, and Jupiter grades on my website.

Great things are happening at Cedar East! In both science and math, we are learning real world links to the content we are studying. So far in our genetics unit we have created Frankenfish and are gearing up to extract DNA from peas as well as complete some CSI work.
How can percents help us involving situations involving money? The 7th graders are working diligently pursuing this essential question. We are solving all kinds of problems including percent increase and decrease, taxes and tips, discounts, and even interest. Hopefully they will be more aware of these these things in their daily lives and become financially literate as they mature.
We were having a rough time in 8th grade math in the last unit with single variable equations, so we slowed down, took some deep breaths, retaught and practiced, practiced, practiced. The students hard work payed off and we will be off on our new math adventure in November.
Don't forget to visit the Great River blog to see the happenings there!
