We know that the human brain is constantly searching for meaning and seeking patterns and connections. Authentic learning situations increase the brain's ability to make connections and retain new information. Just today, students became brain surgeons as they went through a virtual surgery to treat a patients epilepsy. I know that research has shown a relaxed, non-threatening environment that reduces students' fear of failure is considered by some to enhance learning. Today they weren't so much relaxed, but I think I can tell from their comments and faces it is something they will not soon forget.
As we near the end of our brain unit, students will be gearing up their final brain project for their culminating event on February 13th. For this event students have three choices how they would like to show what they have learned, as well as opportunities to further investigate topics they find interest in. I will post the project, rubrics, and timeline in Jupiter when I return next week.
